I asked Jim Seminick if living in Arden in any way influenced how he gardened. “Oh, yes. You have to remember that this is probably the poorest soil I have ever seen. It is almost pure clay. There are places where I planted bushes where I had to dig out a hole first and removed the clay and put soil in. It was almost like planting them in a big box. I used compost very, very much in the beginning. I had a very large compost heap and spread that around to try and improve the soil. Of course, there was a lot of mushroom soil to try and improve the soil. There are spots here where the soil, over 40 years, is pretty nice but in between it’s just pure clay. Also being inspired by Jimmie Ware, that’s who I moved right next to. We talked across the fence and got to be very good friends. She inspired me into doing a lot of gardening I never did before, making cuttings and planting unusual things. Her knowledge of what grew in the shade and what did not was a big help to me. “
