“When I first started gardening, I thought I was in control. Now … I grow what wants to grow in the yard and I am very happy with that. We are talking about art in general here because it is a dialog between the artist and the material. In gardening the material often wins out over the artist. You cannot impose your will on a garden like that. Especially a shady garden, one that has been around for a long, long time. You have to read what it is telling you. You can’t just say ‘I’m going to do this and this’…”
